Step-by-step guide for a smooth and professional finish

Wallpapering a ceiling might seem like a challenge, but with the right preparation and technique, it’s absolutely doable—even rewarding! Here’s how to get the best results:

🔧 Step 1: Prep the Surface

• If your ceiling is already wallpapered with a dark or patterned wallpaper, it should be removed or completely covered with a primer or lining paper.

• Ensure the ceiling is clean, dry, and smooth.

• If the surface has been treated with lime or mineral paint, this must be removed before wallpapering.

• Fill any holes or dents with spackle, then sand smooth for an even surface.

📏 Step 2: Measure and Cut

• Use a laser level or chalk line to mark a straight guide across the ceiling. This helps ensure your wallpaper goes up straight from the start.

• Cut the rolls at the scissor markings. Each strip is numbered—line them up in order before you begin.

🧴 Step 3: Apply the Paste

• Use paste designed for non-woven wallpaper only.

• Apply a thin, even layer of paste to the ceiling using a roller. Start with just one to two strip widths at a time to avoid drying out the paste.

📌 Step 4: Hang the First Strip

• Begin on the left side and work your way to the right.

• Align the long edge of the first strip with your guide line.

• Use a wallpaper smoother to press the strip into place and gently remove air bubbles.

• Trim any excess at the edges with a sharp wallpaper knife.

• Wipe away excess paste using a soft, damp sponge.

🔁 Step 5: Continue with Remaining Strips

• Hang the next strip directly beside the first, making sure the pattern matches up.

• Repeat the same process: apply paste, align the pattern, smooth, trim, and clean.

• Continue across the ceiling until all strips are in place.

💡 Pro Tip:

Get a helping hand. Installing ceiling wallpaper is much easier with two people—especially when handling longer strips.

Free shipping on orders of wallpaper rolls over $150. $45 shipping rate on roll orders under $150. We use UPS, FedEx and DHL for all wallpaper roll orders.

Within the US: Regular, estimated lead time (from order to delivery) is 6-8* business days on orders of regular wallpaper rolls. The estimated lead time for our customized wallpaper is 10-15* business days.

Please note that we aim to dispatch all orders within 2-4 business days, subject to payment clearance and stock availability. Our business hours are Monday to Friday, excluding Swedish and American public holidays. Estimated delivery times are provided as a guide and will begin once your payment has been processed. Please be aware that we are not responsible for any delays caused by destination customs clearance processes.

*Additionally, we would like to inform you about tariff changes set to take effect in April 2025, which may impact both our business and your orders. As most of our wallpaper orders are shipped from our manufacturer in Sweden, part of the European Union, the lead time for certain items may increase by 2-3 business days due to these changes. To help mitigate potential delays or customs issues, we will be bringing select goods to our showroom prior to shipping them to customers. This approach will remain in place until we identify the best solution for managing the impact of the tariffs.

Orders to Canada: Due to the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the implementation of tariffs between the US and Canada, we have made the decision to temporarily suspend shipments to Canada. We will resume operations once we have a clearer understanding of the situation.

Standard products purchased through Scandinavian Wallpaper may be returned for any reason within 45 days from your original purchase from our website. We recommend ordering a sample of the items before purchasing the rolls, as the color may appear differently on your screen.
Items must be returned in their original (still in plastic wrapping) product packaging. A 25% re-stocking fee will be applied to wallpaper returns. Return shipments must be made in appropriate packaging and at customer's expense. Once the returned wallpaper has been verified in good condition a refund will be issued.  Wallpaper samples may not be returned for any reason. You have no right to return a product made to your specifications or that is clearly personalized. As a general rule, all of our photo-walls/murals are made to our customer’s specifications or are clearly personalized.
